Literally meaning “red stick” after being named by a French explorer, Baton Rouge -- Louisiana’s jewel of a capital along the Mississippi River -- exemplifies Old South gentility, Creole culture, Cajun zest, colorful politics and all-around good times. Cuisine blends Creole and Cajun, topped with Italian, German, Spanish, Caribbean and Greek flavorings. Architecture, with a multitude of balconies and elaborate ironwork embellishments, also reflects African American and Caribbean influences. Language mirrors international heritage as well, with everyday chatter on streets and in shops often laced with “cher” as a term of endearment. With beignets, café au lait, and etoufees as menu standards, Baton Rouge serves as one of the state’s culinary epicenters. Rich cultural tradition also is evident in attractions and heard in Zydeco, Blues and Cajun music, with Baton Rouge, now more than ever, the epicenter of Louisiana's cultural excitement and authenticity.

In fall, 2005, hurricanes Katrina and Rita cut devastating swaths through many Louisiana communities. In Baton Rouge, both storms produced rain and wind resulting in fallen limbs and power outages, but no significant damage was incurred compared to wreckage elsewhere. Baton Rouge hotels, restaurants and attractions quickly reopened for business as usual, and the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport has regrouped to host additional air traffic. With proximity to New Orleans and other communities, Baton Rouge has become pivotal in recovery and restoration efforts, with many lodging facilities booked to capacity. Reservations are highly recommended.
